1993 ISOC Trustee Elections
Nominated Candidate
Jean Polly
jpolly@nysernet.org
My resume follows. If you wanted to categorize my Internet involvement,
you might say I speak for "the little guy". I believe access to information
is of paramount importance to developing countries and developing humans. I
am a proponent of K-12 access, public library access, and individual
access.
I have been a user of the Internet for three years; only in the past two
years have I become something of a national spokesperson for public
libraries and the Internet.

Nominator's comments:
--------------------
I would would like to put Jean Armour Polly's name in nomination for
election to the Board of Trustees.
Jean Armour Polly is the Manager of Network Development & User Training at
NYSERNet, Inc. Prior to this, Jean served as Assistant Director for Public
Services and Head of the Microcomputer Department at Liverpool (NY) Public
Library. The Liverpool Public Library is one of the smallest public
libraries with an Internet node, through a grant from NYSERNet, a fact
noted by Vint Cerf in his Spring 1992 "INET News" President's Message.
While at the Liverpool Public Library, Jean founded and managed a public
computer lab with a circulating software collection, a highly unusual
activity for a US public library. The Library enjoys an international
reputation for its proactive stance in furthering public technology.
Jean received her BA in Medieval Studies at Syracuse University in 1974,
and her MS in Library Science from the same University in 1975.
She has written two books on public technology and is a frequent
contributor to library literature and speaker on the lecture circuit. She
also writes the monthly "Computer Currents" column for Library Journal and
co-moderates the Apple Library User's Group discussion conference on the
WELL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link, Sausalito, CA). She is the co-moderator
of the about-to-be announced listserv for public libraries on the Internet:
PUBLIB.
She is active in the American Library Association and the Public Library
Association, and is a member of the Library and Information Technology
Association's Board of Directors. Besides the Internet Society, Jean holds
memberships in CPSR and EFF.
Jean is an advocate of public use of the Internet, and public library
participation in the NREN.
